Ginger Gold
Ginger Gold is presumed to be a chance, wild-seedling apple discovered in the 1980’s in a Winesap orchard in Lovingston, VA by the orchard owner, Clyde H. Harvey. Harvey applied for a plant patent (USPP 7063P) which was granted on 12/05/1989 and expired 12/07/2008. The apple closely resembles Golden Delicious in appearance although it ripens in late summer while Golden Delicious ripens at least two months later. Ginger Gold is a diploid, and thought to be a cross between Golden Delicious and Newtown Pippin (aka Albemarle Pippin). Verification of the parentage through DNA profile work has been performed, but the results have not yet been released. Ginger Gold is currently being grown by a few commercial US orchards as a “Golden” type summer dessert (fresh eating) cultivar that ripens early and keeps pretty well for an early ripening apple.
