wilton widen #9
Wilton Widen #9 is one of our best discoveries in our exploration of Wilton, ME. It’s a spectacular, old, grafted tree (still alive in 2024) and a great apple. DNA profiling has matched Wilton Widen #9 (AMHO 494) with Fall Harvey from the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill in Bolyston, MA (AMHO 526). If the Tower Hill ID is correct, that would mean that both are the true Fall Harvey. We’ll look carefully at the fruit again this fall to see if the ID makes sense. (It’s also noteworthy that the Wilton Widen #9 rootstock has sent up several beautiful stems decades ago, and I’ve grafted those too.)
The apple, that we call “Number 9”, is large, colored a rich yellow, and sometimes has a red-stripy blush. This high quality dessert fruit ripens in late fall/early winter. It was listed and photographed in the Wild Apple Pomological Series ,Vol 4. Our scionwood comes from the tree in Wilton. Currently growing at Super Chilly Farm.
