pri co-op 17

PRI Co-op 17 is a very-late ripening, unnamed selection from the former breeding program at Purdue, Rutgers and Illinois Universities. It was selected in 1971 at the University of Illinois but never named and released. The parentage is: ‘Ill #2(Winesap o.p.) x 668-100’. Presumably ‘688-100’ is a complex selection that includes ‘M. floribunda 821’, the gene they used throughout the program for its scab resistance.

The fruit is described on the GRIN website as, “2 1/8 - 2 3/4", round, blushed yellow, 100% red, yellow to pale-yellow ground, flesh pale yellow to cream, firm, tough, bland, slightly bitter, slightly aromatic; very attractive; very long in refrigerated storage (6-8 months).” We think it may have cider potential. We obtained scionwood from USDA Geneva collection (PI 589953), Currently growing at Super Chilly Farm.
