larry’s north pond
Larry’s North Pond is our provisional name for a huge, ancient tree at the corner of North Pond Road and Rte 225 in Rome, Maine. The old tree died several years ago, but we were able to take scionwood before it succumbed. Rome is the old stomping ground of Belgrade’s Joseph Taylor (1804-1882) who introduced a number of now-lost apples. Could one of them, Rome of Maine, be the true ID of Larry’s North Pond? We have never seen the fruit but now have the tree saved at both the Maine Heritage Orchard and here in Palermo. Currently growing at Super Chilly Farm.
