Red Baron
John received the scionwood for this apple many years ago from a grower who told him it was a University of Minnesota variety called Beacon. Another grower told him the name was incorrect, and he puzzled over the apple for years. In 2011 we got a decent crop, and we decided to put the matter to rest. John called the University and talked with them. Then he scoured his books. He is certain that what we have is another Minnesota apple named Red Baron.
It is a relatively mild dessert variety that we recommend for pies. One of our recent visitors to the farm commented that it was the perfect apple for fruit salad.
