ohio pippin (aka Windham Swett Road)
David Buchanan led me to this old tree at the junction of Rte 202 and the Swett Road in Windham, ME in 2014. The large, roundish-oblate, yellow fruit fit the description of the old Westbrook, ME cultivar, Blake. We were hopeful that we might have found our first Blake tree in the US, although the tree was not old enough. When we find a Blake tree, I think it will have to be very old. We did a DNA profile, and it came back as a match with the triploid, Ohio Pippin. Ohio Pippin originated in Dayton, Ohio in the middle of 19th century. The fruit is suitable for cooking and keeps until about Christmas. Currently growing at Super Chilly Farm.
