marin onfroy

Marin Onfroy is a French bittersweet cider apple with potential for northern growers. We were impressed with the fruit during our trip to Geneva, NY in 2016. USDA obtained the scionwood for the tree in their collection (PI 173982) from France in 1949. However, it may be mis-named as there is no listing of Marin Onfroy in Bore and Fleckinger’s Inventory of French Cider Apples. The inventory does include an apple called Marin Onfroy Gros, but the two apples look visually different from one another.

The Marin Onfroy that is growing here at Super Chilly Farm is small (4 - 4.5 cm), ovate, and angular. The green ground coat has a faint red blush, and there is a russet splash in the small cavity. It leafs out very late and ripens in early October. We obtained our scionwood from the USDA Geneva collection. Currently growing at Super Chilly Farm.
