Hayford Sweet
Hayford Sweet originated in Maysville, Maine around 1870. It is a true sweet apple with no acidity. About twenty years ago John discovered a Hayford Sweet tree in Presque Isles with the help of Aroostock County fruit explorer and orcharist, Steve Miller. That tree is now gone, but this fall John is on the hunt for a second tree nearby to where the first was located.
The medium-sized fruit can be round-blocky, barrel-shaped or slightly conic. The skin has bright, cheerful ,pinkish-red stripes over a light green-yellow ground. The stem is surrounded with a splash of russeted olive green. The fruit is rather dry fruit with no acid. You could make apple sauce with Hayford Sweet and add no sugar.
